AMAZED TO STILL BE GOING STRONG

climate, Earth Poets & Musicians, environment, events, global warming, open mic, performance

When the Coffee House invited eco-poet Jeff Poniewaz to perform there in April 1988, Jeff expanded the invitation. He brought along approximately nine more environmental activist poets, and called our group The Earth Poets.

We're still here, four of the original members, Louisa Loveridge Gallas, Jeff Poniewaz, Harvey Taylor, and I, Suzanne Rosenblatt, with two great poet musicians, Jahmes Finlayson and Holly Haebig, added in. And we're about to give our 25th annual performances. We're still here trying to hook humans into awareness of how they treat planet earth. Most animals live in harmony with their environment; we've been honed to live not by instinct alone. And where has it gotten us? To the brink. And we're all tipping together. How do we stop in mid-tip?

To the brink.
How do we try to make people think?
With words, music, humor,
hooks, rhythm, and rhyme,
and we try to raise funds
for green groups each time.

25th annual seems amazing to me. Every April we perform at the Coffee House and at another venue, for the past 10 years or so at the Urban Ecology Center, before that at UWM. The UEC performance is always a benefit for the UEC. At the Coffee House we select a different beneficiary each year. For 2012 we picked Transition Milwaukee. In both places we also have a special guest. For 2012 we picked Michael Pettit for the Coffee House and Dena Aronson and Michelle Hatfield for the UEC. During the rest of the year we perform, as a group or as individuals, at peace events, eco-events, OCCUPY events, book events, Holly and Jahmes are part of some of the best dance bands in town. And we always keep in mind that we have a message, that we want every individual to think about his or her impact on our planet.

PRESS RELEASE:
Our planet's climate has gone roller-coaster see-saw wild! We've had the warmest, driest winter, while others roll in snow or freeze. Melt burn quake, we never know the headlines ahead of time, at least there's no tsunami in Miami. Since 1988 the Earth Poets & Musicians have used wisdom, vision, irony, rhythm, music, and even humor to remind audiences that Earth's a wondrous place, and we want to keep it that way. On April 14th at the Urban Ecology Center and on April 21st at the Coffee House, they will remind us once again, for the 25th consecutive year!
