Should funding for national academic competitions be cut?

Aug. 4, 2009

Because of budget constraints, the Nicolet School Board is considering limiting funding that academic teams use to attend national competitions. Is this a good way to close budget gaps or should the School Board look for other cuts? Let us know what you think!

Sadly, yes. Until the School Boards stands up to the Teacher's Union, and realizes that teachers salaries should not be immune to the same constraints the rest of us face, in this economy, schools will never have enough money. Look at the administrators salaries (they are online). It is disgusting!!

Absolutely not! Nicolet's participation in national competitions allows students to match their skills with the best in the country. National recruiters (like college admission counselors) recognize these students' talents and reward them accordingly. Nicolet's strength is, and has always been, it's academic rigor and prowess. The opportunity to compete nationally is a major incentive for students and should not be eliminated.

YES!!! Really, do the kids in the North Shore seem to need anything? In the worst economy on years we have a recycling fee, a stormwater fee, and school taxes that don't seem to stop. Things obviously aren't bad enough to make tough decisions.
