Should crossing guard jobs be cut to save money?

Sept. 30, 2009

Wauwatosa officials are considering cuts to the city's crossing guard program to help save money next year, but some community members are worried such a move could make kids less safe.

Should cuts be made to streets where only a few children cross per day, or this idea wrong no matter how much money it saves? Let us know what you think!

Saving money at the expense of the safety of our children (of which I have none) is a crazy idea. Seems there are a lot of other places we should look to cut back before we consider a move like this.

This is a terrible idea. I live near an elementary school, and witness on a daily basis, cars running the stop sign in front of the school. The crossing guards are important to the safety of our children, there are other places that money could be saved.

My kids are some of the few who cross at the 74th and Center intersection. If there was no crossing guard, they simply could not cross there safely. I've seen cars actually drive around the crossing guard. What would happen if he wasn't there? I understand the need to save money, but I wonder what it would cost to have the city police actually enforce pedestrian safety laws!

This is a very bad idea. They are so important to this community. Don't let them go.

I am absolutely outraged at the suggestion that we get rid of some of the crossing guards to save money. Have these alderpeople ever tried to cross Milwaukee Avenue at 68th by foot on a school day at 3PM ? They'd likely see how stupid this idea of reducing the number of crossing guards is. My son and I rely on our fantastic crossing guards, Bruce and Debbie, to help us maneuver the absolutely crazy drivers, texting, talking on their phones, coming to rolling stops, not knowing how to manage a complex all-way stop intersection. We need more coverage of the intersecitons our children cross to get to school, not less. Maybe the alderpeople suggesting this are really just trying to shift the cost of getting to school onto parents by encouraging them to drive their kids to school, instead of promoting a walkable, safe community.

Here we have city officials trying to save some money by putting children in danger.Way to go tosa reps!!!! Here is an idea.... Get rid of 6 alderman and save the taxpayers of this city some money and yet have more than enough extra to pay for crossing guards. Oh wait a minute... The common council already voted that down! What a joke!
