Salons band together to help Azana Brookfield shooting victims

A response by salons to help those affected by the Azana Salon & Spa shooting in Brookfield has surged, with more than 4,000 wanting to help.

Mary Beth Berns, owner of Craig Berns Salon and Spa in Delafield, is spearheading an effort to have salons donate a portion of their proceeds to a fund for Azana victims.

The inaugural effort by Salons Against Domestic Abuse is a Cut It Out day on Nov. 13. Thousands of salons and spas are expected to join the cause, donating a portion of their proceeds.

"It will benefit anything that Azana chooses. It could be for medical care for employees, post-traumatic stress help, support for families, whatever they need," Berns said.

The response to the program has been amazing, Berns said, as word has spread well beyond this area. She said salons from as far away as California have sought to join the effort.

Because of the response, Berns said the best way to find out if your favorite salon or spa is participating is to check with your salon or visit the Facebook event page for the Nov. 13 fundraiser or go to cutitout.org.

Berns said she envisions the event becoming an annual effort, but salons giving back to the community is nothing new.

"Salons are very good about that for all kinds of causes, but what's unusual about this, is because it was so tragic we want to band together (for one cause)," Berns explained. Usually businesses participate in Cut-It-Out day to donate proceeds to individual charitable causes of their choice, but after the Azana tragedy it seemed appropriate for salons to team up this time.

"For this, all proceeds are going to go to Azana's account set up at Associated Bank," Berns said.

Each salon may choose how to participate, Berns said, mostly to attract the greatest number of participants. You can schedule a service, or simply go in and make a donation or buy a product, Berns said. Donations are also accepted at any Associated Bank under the account for Benefit of Azana Salon and Spa.

"Right now the biggest thing is for us to get all the salons and spas set up. The second is to drive the community into their favorite salon or spa on the list (to support the cause)," she said.

"We would like this to be a huge community day where people go in for five minutes, an hour, whatever," to support those affected by the tragedy, Berns said.
