Blowouts, nailbiters, rising stars and a mud bowl mashup. Such is the story of the kickoff weekend of the WIAA football playoffs.

A roundup of our coverage:

-Initial Reaction podcast: Examining week one matchups.

-Mukwonago duked it out against Hartford in a muddy march of the old-school, smashmouth gameplan, winning 29-6.

-Turnovers spelled the end of Sussex Hamilton's playoff hopes. The Chargers lost 23-16 to Waunakee.

-Lake Country Lutheran handily defeated Pecatonica/Argyle, 40-0.

-Star Brown Deer quarterback Zack Baun rushed for 402 yards and six touchdowns against Pewaukee to survive 49-40.

-Arrowhead advanced to the second level of the playoffs for the 10th straight year with a decisive 49-12 win over Milwaukee Riverside.

-Muskego advanced with a convincing 31-7 victory over crosstown rival Manitowoc Lincoln.

-Waukesha West quarterback Conor Blount fired off a burst of three second-quarter touchdown passes as part of a 35-0 shutout of Greenfield.

-Catholic Memorial hit the gas after a slow start to win 49-6 win over Two Rivers.

-Cedarburg will be out for revenge next week against North Shore rival Germantown after advancing on a 49-13 handling of Brookfield East.

-Whitefish Bay executed an indominable run game en route to a 28-0 shutout of Oshkosh North.

-Germantown advanced with an overwhelming 37-18 win over Brookfield Central.

-Franklin's defense was firmly in control as the Sabers topped Kenosha Bradford, 24-7.
