Pohlmann adjusted to transition
Greendale junior named CNI All-Suburban
An untimely coaching change did not bother Kelsey Pohlmann.
The 6-foot-2-inch Greendale junior post took the switch from Jerry Hastings to Andrew Schroeder in stride, averaging 15 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocked shots a game. Her efforts led to her being voted to the CNI All-Suburban Girls Basketball Team.
"I'm a little surprised," Pohlmann said. "Coming into the season, I wasn't sure I'd improve as much as I did. It's a big surprise that I got it, but I worked hard all this year, so I'm happy about it."
She said the coaching change, which came five days before the season opener, was not difficult for her. She had been coached by Hastings and Schroeder in grade school, and Schroeder was to be an assistant this season.
"Coach Schroeder made it really easy for our whole team," Pohlmann said. "He was there for us right away when Mr. Hastings and coach (Ron) Gavinski left. (Schroeder) really made it easy for us to learn, and made our practices fun while we still worked hard. It was a lot of fun working with him this year, and he was a big part of our success."
That is not to say she did not miss Hastings.
"I did miss him a lot," Pohlmann said. "I learned a lot from him. I started playing for him when I was in seventh or eighth. It was too bad to not have him as a coach, but then again, I loved having coach Schroeder as a coach, too."
Pohlmann says she has a lot to work on between now and next season.
"I've already started working out, and just trying to get a little more in shape, increase my vertical agility," Pohlmann said. "I also just want to work on all my basketball skills, my shot, free throws, all my post moves. I definitely want to work on that a lot."
She may hook up with an AAU team this summer "to get more exposure."
Schroeder was happy to be able to get a close view of Pohlmann's play.
"She definitely deserved it (the award)," Schroeder said. "Obviously, I'm a little biased, but I think she's one of the most dominant post presences that I've seen. She grew (in her play) so much. I'm excited to see how much she's going to grow to next season."

Mehryn Kraker of West Allis Central reached a personal milestone Jan. 24 against Wauwatosa East when she cleared 1,000 points for her career, leading her squad with 25 points. She was the leading scorer again Jan. 27 with 16, while teammate Claire Hankins played the hero by hitting a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give the Bulldogs an upset win over Sussex Hamilton. Central has played a brutal schedule this year, and it's paying off to the tune of four straight wins.
