Making the Team

How they are chosen

The NOW sports staff begins compiling each All-Suburban team by contacting all coaches in its coverage area and asking for nominations. Coaches provide comments on each player and season statistics.

That information is put on a ballot to which NOW reporters add their own first-hand impressions of players.

Each staff member then votes for the 10 players he feels should be on the team, ranking them from 10 to 1. The player with the most points is named the Player of the Year and the next nine players are also named to the team.

Those players receiving votes who do not make the team earn high honorable mention and those who are nominated but don't receive votes earn honorable mention.

Pair of aces

Brookfield Central's Joana Bielefeld and Erin Lueder formed a potent pairing for the Lancers this season. The duo led their team to the state finals for the second consecutive season and helped compile a 22-2 overall record and a 21-game winning streak.

Family ties

Muskego's Katie Ellerson, whose father played for the Green Bay Packers, has continued her family's tradition of success. The junior helped the Warriors earn the Southeast Conference title while scoring 15.6 points per game and grabbing 8.5 rebounds. She is also a standout volleyball player.

Matching numbers

West Allis Central's Lauren Hibbard honors her mother's memory with her uniform number and her standout play. The junior has improved her statistics in each of her three seasons and averaged 11.7 points per game during this campaign.

Pohlmann adjusted to transition

Greendale's Kelsey Pohlmann took an early season coaching change in stride and took her game to the next level. The junior post averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds per game.

Running not empty

Oak Creek's Stephanie Running capped a four-year varsity career with her third selection to the All-Suburban squad. The three time all-state selection said one highlight of the year was sharing the court with her sister Rebecca, a freshman, during the Knights' senior night.

Kitzke down, but not out

South Milwaukee standout Katie Kitzke has persevered despite suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in January. The two-time All-Suburban selection was averaging 22.4 points per game before being injured while blocking a shot against Racine Park.

Freshman raises bar

Cudahy freshman Taylor Gradinjan has a trip to state in mind for the Packers next season. In the meantime, she can look back on an inaugural campaign in which she was the leading freshman scorer in the state at 16.2 points per game.

Tough break ended Wortman's breakout season prematurely

Germantown's Eliza Wortman was having a breakout season before being sidelined by a stress fracture in her left foot. The junior was still impressive enough to earn All-Suburban honors.
