How they are chosen
He's only a sophomore and he doesn't own a cell phone. But that hasn't stopped some of college basketball's most recognizable coaches from reaching out to Menomonee Falls' J.P. Tokoto.
To say a stubborn streak runs through the male side of the Showalter clan, is like saying Duke and North Carolina don't get along very well during the basketball season.
It is easy to pinpoint when Nick Romanowski's star was born. In the Sabers' fifth boys basketball game of the season, after turning in four solid but unspectacular previous efforts, the 6-foot-7 junior forward/center went off for what was at the time a career-high 36 points with 16 rebounds in Franklin's overtime victory at Racine Case on Dec. 15.
New Berlin West's Chad Mathwig and Eisenhower's Mitch Sperka led their respective squads to winning campaigns this season and were rewarded with spots on the NOW All-Suburban team.
Wauwatosa West's Sam Krenzien was the "heart and soul" of this season's Trojans, according to coach Mike Landisch. He averaged 15.8 points per game and led the squad to a 17-7 record.
Whitefish Bay began defense of its North Shore Conference title with many holes to fill. Senior John Johnston stepped up and led the Blue Dukes to a 19-8 record and deep into the state tournament.
Whitnall's Will Pelkofer and Greenfield's Alec Molter, who saw plenty of each other during this season's Woodland Conference slate, will be teammates next season when they continue their basketball careers at Carroll University.
Most every year on most every high school basketball team, a player is named the most improved. But this year, Brookfield Central senior guard Alex Diciaula went one better.

Wauwatosa West coach Mike Landisch (right) knew he could count on assistants Chad Stelse (left) and Ryan Bailey as he underwent treatment for cancer.

The latest on Menomonee Falls basketball star J.P. Tokoto, one of the top prep players in the nation.
Dunk you very much: Tokoto put on a slam clinic after a recent practice.
Most recent game: On the heels of Tokoto's decision to attend the University of North Carolina, Menomonee Falls bowed out in the first round of the playoffs in a nail-biting loss to Waukesha South. The question now turns to whether or not Tokoto returns for his senior season with Menomonee Falls. The Indians finished the year 11-12.
Season stats: Tokoto averages 20.5 points per game, fifth among Milwaukee-area players with at least 13 games played.
Next level: Rivals.com lists Tokoto as the No. 40 prospect in the nation among 2012 recruits. He announced he would be attending the University of North Carolina on March 3. Check out our photo gallery and archived video from the event.
